Lesson 8: Sounding Natural: Contractions & Weak Forms
use contractions and weak forms so you sound natural and fluent instead of stiff and textbook-like.
Why this matters
Speakers who say every word fully ("I am going to the store") sound unnatural and slow, which dents Fluency and Pronunciation. Native-like rhythm comes from contractions ("I'm", "it's") and weak forms (reducing small words like to, and, of). This is a polish lesson — sections 8–9.
The Tip/Trick
Contract and weaken the small words; stress the content words. Say "I'm gonna" not "I am going to"; reduce to → /tə/, and → /ən/, of → /əv/.
- Before: "I am going to tell you about the apps that I am using." (robotic, evenly stressed)
- After: "I'm gonna tell you 'bout the apps I'm using." (natural rhythm)
Grammar Focus — Present simple for habits and routines
Rule: use present simple for repeated/habitual actions, often with time phrases (every day, most evenings). Reference: the "Present simple for habits and routines" section.
- "I check my phone first thing every morning."
- "I don't usually watch TV during the week."
- "My apps send me reminders all day."
Vocabulary Cluster — Technology habits
Add to under "Technology habits".
- to be glued to (a screen) — staring at it constantly — "I'm glued to my phone too much."
- a screen-time habit — pattern of device use — "I'm trying to cut my screen-time habit."
- to scroll mindlessly — browse without purpose — "I scroll mindlessly before bed."
- to stay on top of things — keep organised — "Apps help me stay on top of things."
- a digital detox — a break from devices — "I do a digital detox on Sundays."
- to be tech-savvy — good with technology — "My sister is really tech-savvy."
- to back something up — save a copy — "I back up my photos to the cloud."
- notifications keep pinging — alerts keep arriving — "My notifications keep pinging."
Drill these as flashcards — flip, then grade yourself.
Answer Outline
- Answer (contracted): "Honestly, I'm ____ when it comes to tech."
- Habit: "I usually ____ every ____."
- Reflection: "I'm trying to ____ because ____."
Model Answers: 5.0 vs 7.0
Question: How often do you use your phone?
Band 5.0 answer: "I am using my phone very much. I am checking it all the time. It is not good."
Band 7.0 answer: "To be honest, I'm glued to it — probably too much. I check it first thing in the morning and I tend to scroll mindlessly before bed. I'm actually trying to do a digital detox on weekends because the notifications keep pinging all day."
What changed:
- Contractions: "I'm", "it's", "I'm trying".
- Natural collocations: "glued to it", "scroll mindlessly", "digital detox".
- Present simple habits + complex clause: "because the notifications keep pinging".
- Rhythm: content words ("glued", "scroll", "detox") carry the stress.
- Avoiding contractions: "I am / it is / I will" sound stiff → use "I'm / it's / I'll".
- Equal stress on every word: weaken to, and, of, the; stress nouns/verbs.
- Final consonant in contractions: still pronounce "I'm", "it's" clearly.
Your Turn (Record)
Task: (a) Read aloud 3× with contractions + weak forms: "I'm gonna check it later, and I'll back it up to the cloud." (b) Answer 3 questions naturally: How often do you use your phone? What apps do you rely on? Could you live without your phone? ⏱ ~4 min.
Your turn — record & get scored
Part 1- Speak for 1–2 minutes practising this lesson’s skill.
Self-Check + Spaced Review
Done when:
- I used contractions throughout (I'm, it's, I'll, don't).
- I weakened at least the words to/and/of.
- I used ≥2 tech collocations.
Spaced review:
- From Lesson 06: keep final consonants clear even when speaking faster.
- From Lesson 04: keep Part 1 answers to 2–3 sentences.
